PSP Games and the ISO format

ISO is a very popular file format on the internet. This popularity can be attributed to the fact that most of the pirated games across various platforms and consoles on the net are available in this format. ISO games are easy to download  and mount. Once the ISO file is mounted it acts as a virtual CD drive from where you can install and run the game.

But in the case of PSP , ISO games are used in a very different way.  Crackers and coders managed to decompile and modify the PSP firmware code to run images of the UMD disc which are in ISO format. Sony does not support the practice of using  PSP ISO .  They have announced that any one modifying there PSP will have their warranty nulled.

Sony also took legal actions against the coder who modded the PSP firmware. He was popularly called ‘DarkAlex’ and was from spain. Sony never managed to find him but surely made their next PSP version the PSP GO tougher to mod. No hacks or cracks have been released so far for PSP Go.

The successor to the PSP ISO legacy is the CSO format which is basically a compressed ISO file. It promises to be even more popular because its going to be the same game file as a normal ISO file but will occupy far less space and will be easier to share on the net.
